Fitsport Programme

The Fitsport DNA test, as extension of the iGenesis Programme, provides information about individual genetic potential and predispositions related to sport genetics and offers a unique insight on how the body reacts to physical exercise.

The insights on the individual response to sport-and fitness-related aspects will grant the possibility to optimize physical training, improve performance and well-being and maintain the achieved results over time.

Genetic investigation areas

  • Predisposition to the type of effort

The Fitsport test result identifies the predisposition to power or to endurance according to the genetic predisposition to slow or fast muscle fibre contraction speed.

Every muscle is formed by a certain number of strips, in turn consisting of cells known as muscle fibres. Muscles fibres are be classified according to their contraction speed and to their resistance to fatigue:
    - SLOW TWITCH OR TYPE 1 FIBRES
    - FAST TWITCH or TYPE 2 FIBRES

This insight on individual predisposition is useful for optimizing sport training according to individual traits or for choosing the type of sport that can better suit individual potential.

  • Lipolysis capacity

The Fitsport test result also identifies the body's capability of eliminating body fat. This information helps to better adjust the training program in order to lose excess weight and efficiently maintain results over time.

Lipolysis is the process thanks to which fat reserves are broken down and burned, and as a consequence adipose tissue is reduced.
Therefore, in order to lose fat mass more rapidly it is useful to know our lipolysis threshold, i.e. the heart rate at which your body burns the maximum quantity of fat. This insight from sport genetics research makes it possible to modulate the intensity of the effort and obtain the maximum result. If the intensity of the effort, and therefore the heart rate, are too high, the body will not draw energy from the fat mass we wish to eliminate, but from our glucose and glycogen reserves.

  • Antioxidant capacity

The Fitsport programme identifies the individual capability of contrasting oxidative stress. Physical exercise constantly produces excess free radicals which may negatively affect recovery and future physical performance if they accumulate in the body.

A balanced ratio between free radicals and antioxidants is fundamental for avoiding the priming of the phenomenon of oxidative stress, which is responsible for damage at tissue and cell level. Not only may such damage determine - whenever not suitably contrasted - health problems in general, but also a reduction in athletic performance.

  • Inflammatory response

The Fitsport DNA test also investigates the genetic factors related to the body’s response to inflammation. As sport practice can often lead to minor or to major muscle injury or traumas, information about endogenous inflammatory response can help prevent injury or plan an effective solution to the damaging event.

The inflammatory process is a complex system of cell response aimed at repairing any tissue that has been damaged. Inflammatory response (so-called phlogosis) takes place through a series of biochemical alterations aimed at isolating and activating response processes against damaging agents. Inflammatory response is, therefore, a defence mechanism with the purpose of eliminating the cause underlying cell damage and of repairing the cell.

The process

The Fitsport Programme follows a step-by-step process from DNA sampling to sport training counselling which should be integrated with the nutritional counselling.

SAMPLING AND PERSONAL DATA TREATMENT
The DNA sample is collected through a simple and non-invasive method and sent to the molecular biology laboratory for genetic investigation.

The DNA sample is collected through a non-invasive method by using sterile buccal swabs which must be rotated and vigorously rubbed on the internal part of the cheek. The swabs must then be dipped in the vials containing lysis liquid for at least 30 seconds and then the vials must be carefully locked closed. The same sampling must be repeated three times. The consent form must be completed and signed in all its parts. The sampling must take place between meals and after thoroughly rinsing the mouth with water. Certain drinks might affect the sampling.

All sensitive data is protected in compliance with privacy provisions.
The DNA samples are destroyed after 60 days.

DNA extraction and analysis are carried out in certified molecular biology laboratories equipped with latest generation technology. The iGenesis DNA test is currently processed through Micro Array technology specifically customized for- and designed by DF Medica. This technology is able to analyse up to 3000 SNPs contemporarily for each sample. The analysis is carried out in triplicate according to current standards

The definition of a personalized sport training plan is a process that that involves DNA analysis and qualified counselling. The purpose of the Fitsport Programme is to be a service for professionals through which to gather precious information by means of genetic investigation. The genetic information will integrate the clinical data and lifestyle information for the qualified professional to have a complete picture of the patient and of the strategies to be implemented. In this framework professional expertise and practitioner-patient relationship is a key factor in order to offer the highest level of personalization in sport and fitness training.
